So, what I did was remove the surface gloss and apply the new coat of paint over it. Deglossing is an essential step before the application of a fresh coat of paint. And it is generally done with the help of liquid sander deglosser.

Do not confuse it with sandpaper or sanders; unlike these, the liquid sander withdraws the glossy surface only and does not smoothen surfaces, fix flaws, or does the job of a paint primer.

Why is it Necessary to Use?

“Why is it necessary to use the liquid sander deglosser when we can already use sander or sandpaper for any surface?”, you may wonder.

Most times, the liquid sander is confused as an alternative abrasive for sanding different surfaces of workshop items. It is the job of the sandpaper and not the deglosser. Let me clear it up a little for you.

sanding different surfaces before after on furniture

Deglosser merely dulls a previously given finish so that when you use a new coat over it, it looks bright, and the color doesn’t change in any way. If the previous finish has uneven surfaces, scratched or pitted, the only way to fix it is by using sandpaper.

The sandpaper contains the abrasive qualities for a smooth finish and repairing of the surfaces.

Multiple Uses :

You may wonder if the liquid sander is only used on paints, it has a wide range of uses similar to sandpaper.

Besides on paint, it is usable on varnishes, lacquer, enamel, in stain removal, polyurethane, and so on. Now, these are the surface where the deglosser works. But on what objects can you use it?

You can use it on wooden moldings, furniture, kitchen cabinets, walls, door facings, and loads of workshop items. Even the nooks and corners of such objects can be reached easily with the help of liquid sander deglosser.

How to Use Liquid Sander Deglosser: 5 Basic Steps For Wall Application

It is time to know the necessary steps of deglosser application. Let’s get started-

1st Step: Dirt Removal and Cleaning

Before you begin the process, you need to ensure that the surface is dirt-free and cleaned correctly. For this, you need to do some washing.

When you have removed any possible dirt from the wall, you need to wash the whole surface with water and a bit of soap. You can use hand soap or dish soap; anyone will do.

2nd Step: Drying

After the washing, you need to dry the wall properly. Without proper drying, any sort of moisture left on the wall will affect the performance of the liquid sander.

You can let it dry on its own giving enough time, or you can use a clean cloth to carry out the process diligently. Remember to be very careful about the drying.

3rd Step: Application

Take lint-free clothing, place the sander as directed on the cloth, and simply apply it to the wall surface. You need to rub the places you want to degloss.

It will not only degloss the surface but also a good, active surface or bonding area, to be precise, will be created. It will benefit you when the new coat of paint needs to apply.

The limitation is not only bound to a painted wall, but it can also be used on varnished, glossed, or satin varnished surfaces.

4th Step: Wait

After the application, you need to give time to the sander to sit on the wall. The time may vary depending on the indications on the product of different brands.

For instance: Jasco and Klean Strip both liquid sander deglossers take up about 10 minutes after the application to sit on the wall.

5th Step: Removal

The final step is the removal of the sander. Before moving on to this step, make sure to give a good read to the specifications given on the bottle as they may differ based on brands.

You may need to use a dry and clean lint-free cloth or wash the surface for the removal.

Safety Measures:

Since the liquid sander is a highly flammable chemical liquid, you need to take necessary precautionary measures during the usage and disposal as well.

Do not use it in enclosed places where there is a risk of exposure to flames. Remember to wear safety glasses and gloves while you use the product.

Precaution needs to be taken while disposing of the used cloth as well. You need to ensure complete drying of the fabric before you dispose of it since even the residue vapors can be highly risky.

How to Use Liquid Sander Deglosser on Furniture?

You may not always need to rub the sandpapers on your furniture for redoing the paint or re-varnishing; sometimes, the deglosser will do the work.

If your furniture has any kind of varnish that is glossy, shiny, slick, or satin, you may use the liquid sander effectively. But if the surface is irregular, peeling, or chipping, you cannot escape the sanding part.

For furniture, I prefer Klean strip deglosser. The process of deglossing with it is straightforward.

The Procedure:

Firstly, You should clean the wood surface before applying the Liquid Sandpaper. So, you may need a TSP Substitute Cleaner [Prepaint Cleaner] to clean the wood surface properly.

Secondly, What you need to do is, you pour some of the solutions on a clean, lint-free cloth, then rub and wipe your furniture with it. Remember to do the wiping in circular directions for better results. It is applied on smooth surfaces to degloss it only.

If you are trying to remove the glossiness of a surface with a few coats of shine on it, you may need to repeat the process a few times.

You can also use other branded deglossers, including- Ready liquid sander or Jasco deglosser.

Deglossers are suitable for better paint adhesion and works quite well for trims. These are the places where it is almost impossible for the sandpaper to reach, including precision detailing, corners, and deep recesses. The steps to use liquid sander deglosser on trims are as follows-

  1. Cover the surface beneath the trip with a clean, solvent protective cloth and newspaper above it to soak the spills.
  2. Pour some deglosser on a lint-free cloth.
  3. Wipe and clean the trim by moving the cloth in a circular motion till all the dirt and white haze is removed.
  4. Apply deglosser by a 2-inch paintbrush on the trim.
  5. Wait for the deglosser to dry appropriately. It usually takes about half-an-hour or so.
  6. Finally, you can paint the trim after proper drying with an oil or water-based paint.

Before the process, make sure you are wearing your safety goggles and gloves!

How to Apply Liquid Sander Deglosser on Cabinets?

If you are keen on frugal home improvement, then renovating older kitchen cabinets rather than re-installing them is a great idea. And Liquid sander deglosser can be handy here as well.

Make sure to wear your safety accessories and open windows for ventilation.

Take a clean rag, pour some deglosser on it, and rub it on the kitchen cabinet surfaces you would like to degloss. If the surfaces are smooth enough, the deglosser will do an excellent job in removing layers of gloss and finish with lesser effort as well.

Rather than increasing risks of inhaling dust when using sandpaper, the liquid sander can do the work in a hassle-free manner. Just the product you’ve been looking for, isn’t it?

Pros and Cons:

Before you use a liquid sander, you need to clarify to yourself a few points.  For instance, you need to be aware of the size of the project, your budget, chemical-vulnerability, existing supplies, and your time as well.

Now, there are both advantages and disadvantages of using liquid sander; let us have a look.

Pros:

Easy Application:

Compared to traditional sandpapers, it is more comfortable to use a liquid sander. You just need to pour some drops of it on a clean cloth and rub it on the surface for application.

Less time consuming:

Sanding takes a lot of time and can be problematic as well. Sandpaper takes a lot of effort and time to do the job while a single wipe or a few wipes of liquid sander can do the work in half the time and effort.

Electric sanders indeed take less time for sanding, but they also involve corning and gumming up of sandpapers. No such type of problems is faced when using liquid sander deglosser.

Safer to Use:

Compared to sanding, it is a lot safer to use, including less dirt, dust, or wooden chunk generation.

Reaches nooks and crannies:

Sandpapers or sanders cannot reach deep recesses, detailing on furniture or corners. Liquid sanders can be easily used in those places that’ll do the work in no time!

Mess-free:

Sanding makes an enormous mess, and you cannot move around freely while someone is carrying out the task. Besides, post-procedure cleaning is a must as well.

Liquid deglossers do not create a mess, and the spillage can be avoided with careful handling as well.

Many easy liquid sander deglossers are manufactured as well. They are water-based, non-flammable, and biodegradable, as mentioned above, like- Jasco easy deglosser or Klean Strip easy liquid sander.

And as mentioned earlier, you already know how to use easy liquid sandpaper! A piece of cake!

Cons:

Costly:

If you have a limited budget, and you’ve already spent quite enough, with sandpaper or sanders at hand, you might go for them rather than deglossers.

Chemical solution:

If you are allergic or scared of chemical solutions, then you may use sander as an alternative. However, low VOC options of liquid sanders are also available!

Finally:

With less time, effort, health risks, and more the effectiveness, performance, precision, I’d prefer liquid sander deglossers for sure. But it is applicable only for deglossing or dulling the surfaces and cannot be used as an alternative to sanders or sandpapers for smoothening surfaces.

It will surely make an excellent finishing surface for adding a new coat of paint or varnish on it, increasing the bond for paint adhesion. And the application involves a few easy steps only.

I guess you are now clear about the procedures. So, get started!
